My wife and I looked at a garage this weekend. It's of 2.5 car variety, it's deep, has electricity, and will the future site of my workshop and personal wrench-space if all goes well. We received a counter offer last night that included an attached house, so I think we'll take it

good move getting a house with it. Sometimes its nice to have a bed and running water and a place to watch Top Gear.

All those things can also fit in a garage...

that was the same way I bought my garage, I was looking for a garage, my GF was looking for a house, so we bought both.

I think my wife was more excited about the house than I was. I mean the garage has enough space to put 3 cars, a bed, and a kitchen in, but my wife thinks strange and wants different rooms for everything

Houses must be in high demand in your area if you had to buy it. I'm glad you got a package deal though

Exactly. In my current house, my girlfriend was looking for a house, I was looking for a driveway!

good thing for the package deal, since I do need a place to wash my self once in a while. And since she gets the house she also gets a Kitchen to make me a sandwich...

Everytime a car guy gets a garage, an angel gets it's wings.

In my neighborhood it seems like every garage has one of those houses attached. Must be a fad.

Well then thank goodness for the house! I would think a good degreaser should do the trick, but now you won't have to find out since you got a shower.

I'm going to have to tell the wife that the kitchen's only purpose is to MAKE ME A SAMMICH!

I am thinking about renovating a property that has a large 2-car garage already. my idea is to double the depth so that on the right side I can park a 3rd car in front of the right spot (maybe with a lift?) separated with an additional garage door and a wall and have a sitting area next to that car . thats the ultimate man-cave. right?

Awesome! That's how I found my garage too! There were some VERY interesting houses on the same property as some nice garages. It took a while to find one that included a reasonable compromise to both and was still affordable.

Congrats and good luck!

The ultimate man cave! Although beware, you're limiting yourself to selling to an even smaller market by adding all that extra stuff that only a gearhead would appreciate and pay for

This one seems to be the only house in our town that offers price, beds/baths that we want, a nice kitchen/bathroom, close to the schools, within walking distance to downtown, and has a decent sized garage

I was kind of thinking if not a gearhead, someone could convert that back garage into another room...

Damn people always wanting to bundle... Hopefully you got a good deal on that garage, which makes living in that house a bit more bearable.

Congrats! Hopefully she lets you sleep in the house once and while. If not, it's not the end of the world.

Well they screwed me over on the garage, but adding the house made it all worth the extra money.

Really though, it depends how you look at it. Any of the next towns, this house is worth $25k less, but there's no downtown in either of them, they have bad schools, and no sense of community, along with increased crime (still not much, but it's almost non-existent in our town). In our town, the price we got is considered a bargain. So what do you want- a house in a great community that you pay a little more for, or do you want to live in a bland town for a lot less?

Just have to insulate the garage and I can finally make it through these terrible WI winters! I guess I could just hang my camping hammock from the rafters and sleep in there- there's no wind inside the garage to take away body heat. We are brilliant! I love car people

Careful! Owning a garage can lead to crazy projects. Like fixing the garage!

Yowza! That's quite the remodel! I don't think my wife will let me do anything like that, especially in the near future since our funds will be mostly wiped out by this

Yeah it was a 'fixer upper' - the only way we could afford it. We were there 3 years then had to rebuild the garage walls and front and back porches and stairs. Fortunately that was all done about 10 years ago and is holding up great.

The old garage had the base of the walls sitting on the dirt. That doesn't work well after a century... so we propped up the roof, knocked the wall out, poured concrete and stuffed a wall back in! That had already been done to the back 2/3 of the garage, but not the front 1/3. You can see the roofline dip in one of the 'before' pictures, and how much the roofline came up before we ripped the front shingles out.

The roof had been leaking for years. But I didn't want to repair the roof only to have all the shingling break when we straightened it out by fixing the walls! So we kept nailing tarps to the roof for the first couple years...
